Red Sox Fire Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom
The Boston Red Sox have fired chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom, the team announced on Thursday. The move comes after the Red Sox (73-72) are in danger of finishing in last place in the American League East for the third time in four years.
“The decision was not made lightly or easily,” said Red Sox president/CEO Sam Kennedy. “We all know where we are in the standings. It’s a painful reality that fans feel as deeply as we do. Our fans deserve a winning, competitive team that consistently plays postseason baseball.”
Bloom was hired by the Red Sox in October 2019, and he was tasked with rebuilding the team’s farm system. He was also responsible for making personnel decisions for the major league team.
While Bloom did improve the Red Sox’s farm system, the team has not been as successful on the field. The Red Sox have missed the playoffs twice in Bloom’s four seasons.
Kennedy said that the Red Sox will be looking for a new chief baseball officer who can help the team win. He also said that he expects Alex Cora to return as manager next season.
Bloom was informed of the news in a meeting at Fenway Park with principal owner John Henry, chairman Tom Werner and Red Sox president/CEO Sam Kennedy.
“While parting ways is not taken lightly, today signals a new direction for our club,” said Henry in a press release. “Our organization has significant expectations on the field and while Chaim’s efforts in revitalizing our baseball infrastructure have helped set the stage for the future, we will today begin a search for new leadership. Everyone who knows Chaim has a deep appreciation and respect for the kind of person he is. His time with us will always be marked by his professionalism, integrity and an unwavering respect for our club and its legacy.”
Kennedy said the Red Sox will cast a wide net and keep an open mind in their quest to find the next leader of their baseball operations department. He added that the process of finding Bloom’s successor could “take a while.”
One candidate Kennedy did rule out is his former co-worker and high school classmate, Theo Epstein, who currently works for Major League Baseball. Epstein was general manager of the Red Sox from 2003-11, leading the club to a pair of World Series titles and six postseason appearances in nine years.
“I know there’s speculation, there’s professional history, there’s even an even longer personal history,” Kennedy said. “But I can rule Theo Epstein out as a candidate for one of these positions.”
Kennedy said he will be looking for a leader who can help the Red Sox build a winning team. He also said that he wants someone who is committed to the long-term success of the organization.
Bloom’s run in Boston started with a trade that didn’t go over well with the fanbase. That was the trade of superstar Mookie Betts to the Dodgers for Alex Verdugo, Connor Wong and Jeter Downs. Betts had one year remaining on his contract at the time of the trade. Verdugo has been a regular for the Red Sox for four seasons and Wong emerged into the team’s starting catcher this season. Downs didn’t live up to expectations and was designated for assignment last winter.
Despite the trade, Bloom did make some progress in rebuilding the Red Sox’s farm system. He also signed some key free agents, such as Trevor Story and Christian Vazquez. However, the Red Sox have not been able to consistently win on the field.
The Red Sox are hoping that a new leader can help them turn things around. They are willing to wait as long as it takes to find the right person for the job.
Bloom’s Red Sox Tenure Had Its Ups and Downs
Chaim Bloom’s four-year tenure as the Red Sox’s chief baseball officer had its ups and downs. He started with a bang, helping the team make the playoffs in 2021. However, the Red Sox have not been able to consistently win since then.
The highlight of Bloom’s run was the 2021 season. The Red Sox came from behind to win the AL Wild Card Game and then upset the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL Division Series. They were two wins away from the World Series, but the Houston Astros came back to win the series.
In 2022, the Red Sox took a step back and finished with a losing record. They lost some key players to free agency, including Xander Bogaerts, J.D. Martinez, and Nathan Eovaldi. They also did not make any major moves at the trade deadline, even though they were in the playoff race.
Bloom’s decision not to make any moves at the trade deadline was controversial. Some fans felt that he should have done more to help the team win. However, Bloom said that he wanted to stay true to his conservative approach.
Only time will tell how Bloom’s tenure with the Red Sox will be judged. He made some progress in rebuilding the farm system, but the team has not been able to consistently win on the field.
Here are some of the key moments in Bloom’s tenure:
- Traded Mookie Betts to the Dodgers for Alex Verdugo, Connor Wong, and Jeter Downs in 2019.
- Led the Red Sox to the playoffs in 2021.
- Lost the AL Championship Series to the Astros in 2021.
- Finished with a losing record in 2022.
- Did not make any major moves at the trade deadline in 2022.
It is still too early to say whether Bloom was a success or a failure as the Red Sox’s chief baseball officer. However, his tenure was certainly not without its ups and downs.
Bloom Made Progress in Rebuilding Red Sox Farm System, But Team Failed to Meet Expectations
Chaim Bloom was hired by the Red Sox in 2019 with the goal of rebuilding the team’s farm system. The system was ranked one of the worst in the majors at the time, but Bloom has made significant progress.
The Red Sox’s minor league system is now ranked 16th by MLB Pipeline. The team also has a core of young players producing at the major league level, including Triston Casas, Brayan Bello, Jarren Duran, and Wilyer Abreu.
However, the positives have been outweighed by the fact that the Red Sox have not made the playoffs since 2021. The team finished in last place in the American League East in 2022.
Red Sox president/CEO Sam Kennedy said that the team expected to be a playoff contender this year. “We all know we fell short of that,” he said.
It is still too early to say whether Bloom was a success or a failure as the Red Sox’s chief baseball officer. However, he has made some progress in rebuilding the farm system. The team will need to continue to develop its young players and make some smart moves in free agency in order to return to the playoffs.
